Micro Monday Review #51 Pinetop Distillery's Carolina Moonshine

Updated: Feb 21, 2021

Distillery: Pinetop Distillery

Proof: 80

Age: Unaged White Whiskey

Mashbill: 70% corn, 5% rye, 15% malted barley, 10% Wheat

BACKGROUND: Pinetop distillery is a craft distillery located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Pinetop prides itself on sourcing all of their grains from local area. The Carolina moonshine is double distilled & bottles at 40%. Moonshine is distinctively different because it is not put through a barreling process to age, giving it it’s clear color. This moonshine made on a continuous still then put through a heat exchanger which speeds up the process.

NOSE: The nose is more similar to a gin than an aged american whiskey. There is no oak, caramel, or vanilla flavors but there were strong citrus notes along with sweet corn. (18/25)

PALATE: The whiskey is quite simple and light but the flavors are distinct and tasty. We pulled notes of sweet vanilla, floral notes, citrus notes, and hay. It is light and simple but still tasty. (28/40)

FINISH: The finish is medium in length and burns a little on the way down. There are some notes of vanilla and more floralness. It does warm you up on the way down which is surprising for the proof. (19/25)

VALUE: At $28 this is a very cool bottle to add to the shelf. It is unique, cheap, and a nice change of pace for all of you nightly drinkers. (8/10)

Overall: 74/100

FINAL THOUGHTS: This is definitely very different from traditional bourbon, but I did thoroughly enjoy the glass. Unique flavors and could definitely de well as a mixer for a fruity whiskey-based drink.

Similar & Slightly Better Whiskey: Mellow Yellow Corn Whiskey

Similar & Equal Whiskey: Buffalo Trace White Dog

Similar & Slightly Worse Whiskey: Hudson New York Corn Whiskey
