Distillery: Five Points Distilling
Proof: 117.7
Age: 4 Years
Mashbill: 90% Texas soft red winter wheat and 10% malted barley
BACKGROUND: Lone Elm is made from a full Texas-grown wheat. This bottle is made with the process of "single-grain" using almost all wheat which is normally an additive grain to the mashbill. Lone Elm Single Barrel Texas Wheat Whiskey is made grain to glass meaning distillery has their hands involved in all methods of production and distilling. The whiskey is made with local red wheat and mixed with authentic Texas rainwater.
NOSE: The nose has a nose that reminds me of freshly sawed wood. There are strong notes of fresh sawdust and oak that are dominating but there are also notes of molasses, caramelized brown sugar, and dried fruit. (19/25)
PALATE: The has a very sweet flavor profile that is expected from the softer wheat. We pulled flavors of dried fruit, vanilla, caramel, chewy leather, and a dry oak spice. Overall the whiskey has a strong oak presence but is still very smooth and sweet. (34/40)
FINISH: The finish starts with some sweet toasted oak, cracked pepper, and chewy leather. It is very full and warming from the proof. (21/25)
VALUE: Lone Elm's Single Barrel has a SRP of $65 which is on the pricier side but when you factor in the grain quality cost and the fact that this is bottled at cask strength it is understandable. (6/10)
Overall: 80/100
FINAL THOUGHTS: A very unique enjoyable whiskey. If you are a fan of wheated whiskeys or cognac, you would love this bottle. I will definitely be trying the small batch if I ever get the chance! Thank you Lone Elm for sending us your product to sample, can't wait to see what the rest of the community has to say.
