Distillery: Chicken Cock Distillery
Proof: 90
Age: Minimum 2 years
Mashbill: 95% rye & 5% malted barley
BACKGROUND: Chicken Cock Distillery was founded in 1856 in Paris Kentucky. I.T is one of the oldest whiskeys in the world, surviving the late 1800s, the prohibition era, and was the house whiskey at the famous “The Cotton Club.” This whiskey has been backed by huge names in the jazz world including Duke Ellington.
NOSE: Chicken Cock opens with a vibrant bold citrus burst running through all of your senses, as the citrus orange flavors start to fade a light vanilla bean and oak hints come to the forefront. (21/25)
PALATE: On the first sip, a warm rye flavor lightly coats your mouth. The rye flavor starts to turn into a sweet orange sherbert that mellows into a light caramel oak flavor. On second sip a light tingly spice coats your mouth with wonderfully sweet nutty notes that eventually mellow into a dry earthy flavor. (30/40)
FINISH: The finish is quite smooth and mellow, light nights of oaked spice and light caramelized vanilla. The light rye notes combine with the citrus flavors from the nose come up from your chest fading into nothing as time goes on. (21/25)
VALUE: For $70 this price point is a little too high. Being that it is only 90 proof and shows some young tendencies, I think the price should be closer to $50 (6/10)
Overall: 78/100
FINAL THOUGHTS: Chicken Cock is a delightful choice of whiskey for anyone who likes light smooth whiskeys. The light traditional notes make a perfect pairing with the orange flavored making this great for anyone who is trying to expand their palate range.
