Review #173 Heaven's Door Double Barrel Whiskey

Distillery: Sourced from Undisclosed TN Distillery(ies)

Proof: 100

Age: NAS

Mashbill: Undisclosed (Blend of 3 Whiskeys)

BACKGROUND: First introduced to the market in 2018, Heaven's Door is a whiskey company founded by the iconic Bob Dylan and names aptly after his hit song "Knocking on Heaven's Door". Heaven's Door is a collaboration between Dylan and Spirits Investment Partners "SIP" who are a boutique spirits innovation company. Heaven's Door Distillery is launching a distillery and center for the arts in downtown Nashville sometime this year! Heaven's Door produces 3 flagship products a Tennessee Straight Bourbon, Straight Rye Whiskey, and this Double Barrel Whiskey. Heaven's Door sources from an undisclosed distillery in TN which is most likely George Dickel. Their Double Barrel whiskey takes their already-aged 6-year whiskey, aged in an alligator charred new American oak barrel and is aged for at least another year in a toasted new American oak barrel to "yield a satisfying whiskey with notes of caramel, oak, citrus, and spice."

NOSE: The nose is very sweet but surprisingly light with scents of oaky spice, clove, light maple syrup, vanilla, and crisp citrus zest. The best way I would describe the nose is sharp and sweet. Oak and oak sugars dominate the nose but it is still light, sweet, and enjoyable. (20/25)

PALATE: Like most double barreled whiskey this is a very sweet flavor profile made up of vanilla, brown sugar, and apples drizzled with honey and cinnamon. Towards the back of the palate there were some very dry oak notes that changed the dynamics of the palate. The whiskey has a syrupy feel and sweetness to it with a ton of sweet flavors and oak flavors. (31/40)

FINISH: The whiskey exemplifies the oak and oak sugar flavors whiskey can pull from the barrel. There is a ton of oak, peppercorn, and white pepper notes on the finish that is medium in length and quite dry. (21/25)

VALUE: Heaven's Door Double Barrel has an SRP of $50 which is a fair price for a double barreled whiskey. (6/10)

Overall: 78/100

FINAL THOUGHTS: Heaven's Door Double Barrel Whiskey is a very tasty and flavorful whiskey with the standard double barrel whiskey notes. The oak notes shine through on this one. We were surprised by the lighter mouthfeel for a 100 proof double barrel whiskey compared to others like 1910 and Double Oaked which have lower proof points.

Similar & Slightly Better Whiskey: Woodford Reserve Double Oaked

Similar & Equal Whiskey: Old Forester 1910

Similar & Slightly Worse Whiskey: Jim Beam Double Oaked
