Distillery: Jim Beam
Proof: 100
Age: NAS
Mashbill: Undisclosed (believed to be over 51% rye)
BACKGROUND: Knob Creek’s Twice Barreled rye was originally released in November of 2018. They take the standard Knob Creek Rye barrels, and finish them in brand new level 4 charred barrels to give it an extra kick.
NOSE: The nose on this is absolutely on par for the course. Strong notes of rye, oats, and charred oak smack you right in the face as you take your first whiff. As the spice lingers you get some notes of ethanol, that are followed up with pleasant sweet notes of honey and vanilla. (22/25)
PALATE: I was pleasantly surprised by the sweet flavors in this expression. With the nose as strong as it was, I was expecting much more oaky spice. Sweet notes of vanilla, cracked pepper, and rye dance around your mouth with underlying flavors of molasses, brown sugar, and smoke. (31/40)
FINISH: Like most double barreled bottles, the rye/oak spice carries over throughout the finish leaving you a tingling sensation on your tongue and around your mouth. Hints of vanilla and brown sugar come and go undersigned with a smoky leather flavor (21/25)
VALUE: For $45, this is a terrific purchase. One of my favorite Knob Creek expressions, a delightful rollercoaster of flavors. (7/10)
Overall: 81/100
FINAL THOUGHTS: Knob Creek Twice Barreled Rye is a perfect example of how a double barrel whiskey is supposed to taste. Loaded with sweet heat and smokiness, perfect for any smoked cocktail, or enjoyed neat for those who love sweet spice.
