Distillery: Stitzel-Weller
Proof: 116.6
Age: NAS (5-8 year)
Mashbill: 68% corn, 28% rye, & 4% malted barley
BACKGROUND: The 2021 Bulleit batch strength is made with barrels hand selected by the master distiller before being combined with select single barrel selections before aged and bottles in the Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Louisville Kentucky.
NOSE: The nose comes with quite a pop opening with strong oak & cracked pepper. Upon second whiff scents of orange, vanilla, and caramel/brown sugar that intermingle with a nice undertone of ethanol to keep you on your toes. (21/25)
PALATE: Like past Bulleit Barrel Strength expressions, batch 6 is a hot cinnamon bomb. With a dry mouthfeel, batch 6 is loaded with brown sugar, oak, and tons of black pepper. Even with the high proof, this bottle still shows slight notes of vanilla and molasses, but the cinnamon and rye overpower it quite a bit in our opinion. (29/40)
FINISH: Due to the high spice on the palate the finish lacks the flavor I was hoping for, as your mouth tingles from the cinnamon and oak, you can get light hints of citrus in your breath, as the flavor fades. (21/25)
VALUE: For $60 I would recommend the single barrel before the batch strength. (6/10)
Overall: 77/100
FINAL THOUGHTS: Being a big fan of the Single Barrel, I was unfortunately disappointed with this Bullet Expression, $60 is just a little too much compared to other barrel strength bourbons on the market.
