BACKGROUND: Molly Brown is a craft whiskey distillery located in Denver, CO. Molly Brown Bourbons are true "Grain to Glass" spirits as they use grains grown on their faming partners land. They then mill their own grain, ferment it, and distill it to produce their spirits. When cutting the heads, hearts, and tails of the whiskey, Molly Brown Spirits chooses the the smoothest portion of the heart to be aged in full size 53-gallon new American charred oak barrels. Each mature barrel is individually sampled before being bottled once it is deemed to meet our stringent guidelines. They do not chill filter their whiskey and use pure Rocky Mountain water to proof it down. Molly Brown has two bourbons in their portfolio: this high rye bourbon and their standard bourbon.
NOSE: Hints of licorice and mint waft up from the glass with warm roasted chocolate undertones. Although the nose hints at the youth of the whiskey, it is still balanced, smooth, and full of aroma. This whiskey shows how a high rye percentage in the mashbill affects the nose (21/25)
PALATE: As soon as the whiskey touched our tongue we were immediately reminded of biting into a milk chocolate bar. Flavors of roasted nut, chocolate fudge, and black pepper jump out giving this whiskey a sweet and spicy profile. There is a rawness to the whiskey that burns a little on the way down but overall I was impressed by the unique flavor profile on this whiskey (32/40)
FINISH: The finish is medium in length and full of oak, rye spice, and black pepper with hints of chocolate malt. The spice seems to sit in the back of the mouth for a while too (21/25)
VALUE: A $50 SRP is a very fair price for this very uniquely flavored whiskey from a true "grain-to-glass" distillery (7/10)
Overall: 81/100
FINAL THOUGHTS: Molly Brown Spirit's High Rye Bourbon is a very flavorful whiskey with a unique sweet and spicy profile. The combination of the spicy rye notes and the chocolate notes make for a delicious treat. We highly recommend this whiskey to anyone who can find it if they enjoy a sweet and spicy whiskey that doesn't break the bank!
