Review #233 Milam & Greene Port Finished Rye Whiskey

Distillery: Sourced from MGP

Proof: 94

Age: NAS

Mashbill: Undisclosed

BACKGROUND: Milam & Greene is a distillery in Blanco, TX. They originally lanched as Ben Milam Whiskey but in 2019 Heather Greene, a world-renowned whiskey expert, joined the company as CEO and master blender and they changed their name to Milam & Greene. Ben Milam was a Freedom Fighter in the Texas Revolution, his descendent, Marsha Milam, a whiskey fanatic and successful Austin-based entrepreneur launched the brand. They started by sourcing their whiskey and hiring experts to help them blend incredible whiskeys. Milam & Greene is a woman ran distillery having women in all three key positions, founder, master blender/CEO, and master distiller. Marlene Holmes is the master distiller and she started her career in 1990 with Jim Beam where she learned the whiskey craft. They have 3 flagship whiskeys: this MGP sourced Port Finished Rye, a Single Barrel Straight Bourbon, and a Triple Cask (Review #90). They also have some distillery reserve, grain-to-glass whiskeys and private barrels that can get as old as 12 years old. For their port finished rye whiskey, Milam & Greene sources the whiskey from Indiana before aging it in old port wine casks.

NOSE: Sweet and candy notes of cherry, berry cotton candy, sweet butterscotch, and blackberry. There is a richness to the nose that is inviting you to take a sip! Overall, it sure it sweet and highlights the port wine finish without being over the top (22/25)

PALATE: Buttery smooth and rich whiskey coats your tongue with delicious flavors of raw sugar cane, candied cherries, stone fruit, and freshly baked berry pie. On second sip there are some spice notes attributable to being a rye whiskey but it more baking spices and isn't quite sharp but rather protruding and adding a warm dynamic. Overall, this is a very rich flavor profile for a 94 proof whiskey with a sweet and soft spice flavor profile highlighting many of the wine finished notes. (35/40)

FINISH: The finish is medium in length and highlights the stone fruit notes and baking spices. It is very warming and leaves a tingle in your throat in a good way as it goes down (21/25)

VALUE: A $45 SRP makes this a STEAL! Buy, buy, buy (10/10)

Overall: 88/100

FINAL THOUGHTS: Milam & Green Port Wine Cask finished Rye Whiskey is an absolute delight! With a richness and smoothness that is accompanied by a balanced flavor profile highlighting the fruity wine notes while subtly adding a richness from the rye whiskey. We highly recommend this to anyone who likes red wine, sweet whiskey, or looking for a new dessert whiskey! This makes a great holiday gift too!
