Review #247: Woodford Reserve Straight Wheat Whiskey

Review #247: Woodford Reserve Straight Wheat Whiskey

Distillery: Woodford Reserve Distillery

Proof: 90.4

Age: NAS

Mashbill: 52% Wheat, 20% Malted Barley, 20% Corn, 8% Rye

BACKGROUND: Woodford Reserve Wheat Whiskey is the newest addition to the Woodford Reserve line. Master Distiller Chris Morris decided to add the wheated to the lineup to complete the 4 styles of American whiskey, each with a different grain, bourbon, rye, wheat, & malt.

NOSE: Light & bright, on first whiff, notes of wheat, brown sugar, vanilla, hay, & light oak scents. As time goes on the vanilla becomes more prevalent lined with notes of caramelized green apple, & pears. (20/25)

PALATE: Bright notes of wheat grain and vanilla coat the inside of your mouth with a sweet oaked spice. As for the mouthfeel itself it was quite dry and thin. As the sweets fade a fresh oak flavor lightly but fades quite quickly. (29/40)

FINISH: Light and quick, as the oak and sweets fade, cracked pepper, oak, and apple notes start to play hide and seek until a peach vanilla are left fading into nothing. (20/25)

VALUE: The MSRP is $35, which is right on par for what you get. This is a perfect bottle to make cocktails or to bring out when casual whiskey drinkers want something to try. (6/10)

Overall: 76/100

FINAL THOUGHTS: Woodford Reserve Wheated falls right where it should be, a good whiskey that can be broken out to make a cocktail at any time for a great price. This is a bottle that I will most definitely try to keep on my shelf.
