Distillery: Michter's Distillery
Proof: 83.4
Age: NAS
Mashbill: Undisclosed
BACKGROUND: Unlike Bourbon or Rye, which, must be aged in new charred oak barrels, Michter's American Whiskey is aged in used whiskey barrels. In late 2013, then Master Distiller Willie Pratt agreed to re-release Unblended American Whiskey after a nearly 3 year absence from the market. Michter's US*1 Unblended American Whiskey never contains grain neutral spirits which gives it the “unblended” distinction.
NOSE: As soon as you take a smell of the whiskey you are greeted by sweet vanilla, brown sugar, and honey. It is a light and sweet nose with a slight ethanol burn. There is also some oak that lays beneath the nose. (17/25)
PALATE: The palate is very smooth and full of flavors. It carries with it excellent sweetness with notes of rich caramel, sweet vanilla, light spice, and some honey. None of the flavors are very deep and it has a watered down taste that can be be attributed to the low proof. It is very easy to drink and very enjoyable. (30/40)
FINISH: The finish is quite short but is mostly dominated by oak, rye spice, and some burnt caramel. It is very quick though. (20/25)
VALUE: Michter's American carries an SRP of $45 which is a good price but we feel it would best be priced at $35. (8/10)
Overall: 75/100
FINAL THOUGHTS: Michter's American Whiskey is a very good and inexpensive whiskey that is easy to drink with an overall sweeter flavor profile. This is a great introductory whiskey or daily drinker for those who like the sweeter notes. This American Whiskey is full of flavor notes that is consistent with bourbon whiskey.
