Review #39 Breckenridge Straight Bourbon

Updated: Feb 20, 2021

Distillery: Breckenridge & Sourced

Proof: 86

Age: NAS

Mashbill: Blend of whiskeys, the sourced mashbills are undisclosed but Breckenridge's distillate is 56% Corn, 38% Rye, 6% Malted Barley

BACKGROUND: Breckenridge was founded in 2008 in Breckenridge, CO. They are called the World's Highest Distillery based on their location. They are a highly awarded distillery for their blended whiskey. They originally sourced all of their whiskeys but have since started adding their own distillate into their whiskey. Their portfolio is cast with many whiskeys including this blended bourbon, many finished American whiskeys, some single barrel bourbon, and some limited release whiskeys. They use a high rye mashbill in their blended bourbon whiskey that is aged for at least 3 years. Breckenridge Distillery uses Rocky Mountain water to proof down their whiskey.

NOSE: The nose is very light an simple with a slight ethanol burn. I was able to pull our notes of vanilla extract, butterscotch, bruleé'd orange citrus, and pine. The notes are not too deep but still distinguishable. (19/25)

PALATE: Breckenridge's Blended Bourbon is very sweet, easy to drink, and light - which can be attributed to the very low proof of 86. Up front are notes of butterscotch, honey, and oak that form into a vanilla syrup flavor. The whiskey has an oily feel to it but it doesn't coat the mouth. (28/40)

FINISH: Like the nose and palate, it is simple and sweet with notes of oak and burnt caramel making up the finish. It is relatively short but still enjoyable. (19/25)

VALUE: Breckenridge Blended Bourbon has a $40 SRP. We think that is a fair asking price given the current whiskey market. (8/10)

Overall: 74/100

FINAL THOUGHTS: This is a very light and easy to sip bourbon with classic bourbon flavors. The proof is quite low and therefore the palate tastes watered down. You can tell it’s a younger whiskey in the palate as well due to the light oak flavors that are not quite matured yet. This is a good introduction bourbon to any new whiskey drinkers.
