Distillery: Four Roses
Proof: 100
Age: 7 years 6 months
Mashbill: 60% corn, 35% rye, 5% malted barley
BACKGROUND: Four Roses uses 2 different mashbills and 5 different yeast strains to create 10 unique bourbon recipes. Their standard 100 proof single barrel is always OBSV, and consequently if it is a Four Roses Single Barrel and 100 proof then it must be OBSV. This single barrel came from warehouse RN and barrel number 4-2k. The strain of yeast used is version “V” which is described as having notes of delicate fruit, tons of spice, and a creaminess. Four Roses also has private selections and a limited annual release of their mash bills at barrel proof that are always highly sought after and for good reason. This single barrel select is the OBSV recipe which is the B mashbill and V year strain which is described as having notes of delicate fruit, tons of spice, and a creaminess.
NOSE: You’re greeted with immediate floral notes and vanilla that is followed by rich baking spice and some dried berry. There’s a slight presence of alcohol in the background (21/25)
PALATE: Tons of caramel, vanilla, and smooth rye spice! All the flavors are full and complex. The overall palate is delicate and well balanced. It has a nice velvety mouthfeel (34/40)
FINISH: A classic finish that is quite long, and warm. It’s the classic caramel, rye spice, and oak but the flavors seem to enrich as time goes on (21/25)
VALUE: At an SRP of $60 for a private selection of 4R SiB not at barrel proof, the value is not incredible. Although this bottle is better than the regular 4R SiB that we have, it’s not $25 better. It would be best at $45. (8/10)
Overall: 84/100
FINAL THOUGHTS: I saw this sitting at a local liquor store and decided to pick it up. Although this was a richer and smoother 4R SiB it’s not worth the increase in price over the regular SiB. If you see the barrel proof options, those are always worth the $65
