Distillery: Buffalo Trace
Proof: 90
Age: 12 yrs
Mashbill: Undisclosed (Wheated)
BACKGROUND: This something we all have heard rumors about from when it sat on the shelf at $30. Well after everyone said you have to try this as it is the best I finally got my hands on a bottle at MSRP. The Weller line is the little brother to the Pappy line and this is highly sought after due to its' age. William Larue Weller from the BTAC line is supposed to be Weller 12 at barrel proof and sometimes aged a little more. So here we go, a unicorn!
NOSE: The nose is not overly deep and requires a deep smell which is due to the lower proof. However, it is very sweet and smooth. There is some wonderful caramel and toasted almond vanilla ice cream, and light oak. (24/25)
PALATE: Oh so smooth. From first sip it coated my mouth and felt like a warm hug. It is perfectly balanced with sweet vanilla, creamed corn, some citrus, and light oak. It flirts with being oversweet but never goes over the line. Very similair to the nose but not too much. The only knock is that the flavors are not as rich as I would like. (36/40)
FINISH: The finish is medium in length. The age appears here with some nice oak, white pepper, some light honey and leather as well. There is definitely a tiny but of heat that arises but I almost like it, not too much, just right, daring you to take a nother sip. (23/25)
VALUE: With an SRP of $35 this is the best deal on the market hands down 10/10. Unfortunately, this is often marked up well north of $120. A realistic price would be $45. I would pay $60 for this if I saw it (9/10)
Overall: 92/100
FINAL THOUGHTS: An incredible whiskey at an unbeatable price. Well worth the hype and the hunt. It is incredibly smooth, sweet, balanced, tasty, and delicious. I wish the proof was slightly higher but it is just a minor complaint. This is an absolutely incredible whiskey.
